Repainting Your Home to Sell

There is much to consider when staging your home, especially when you want to sell quickly. Something to put on your staging to-do list, that is sometimes undervalued, is repainting. If time and budget allows, repainting your home would be well worth the effort and help attract more potential buyers if done right.

Why repaint?

Repainting will help freshen the look of your home and the right colors will appeal to a broader audience, which will net you more potential offers in the long run. If there are any scuffs, cracks, mildew, or other blemishes scattered throughout your home from years of wear and tear, it’s a good idea to touch those up. In addition, a modern coat of paint can elevate the look and feel of an older home with an outdated color scheme.

Interior, exterior, or both?

Price-wise, repainting the interior of your home is cheaper than redoing the outside. It’s especially a good idea to repaint if you have inconsistent color schemes, such as different colored kids’ rooms, that break the feeling of unity in the overall color scheme and inject too much of their own personality into the room.

The exterior could burn a larger hole in the pocket, but may be worth doing if its current color is too flashy or worn down with age and weathering. You may also want to consider repainting any doors that seem beat up or off-scheme.

If you’re leaving behind a home with decades of use and history, you may want to consider painting both the interior and exterior, especially if there’s noticeable cracking and damage that shows it. Think of it as a nice little parting gift to thank the space for its service.

What makes a good color scheme?

When it comes to interior painting, a good rule of thumb is to pick colors that open up the space and make it look inviting. This will help transform your home into the blank canvas that potential buyers can easily envision themselves and their belongings in.

These will include style-agnostic, light colors such as gray, beige, and off-white. Although these colors won’t bring personality and pizazz all on their own, they will help achieve the goal of appealing to as many people as possible. When considering your color scheme, try to stick to three colors without getting too creative, even if temptation strikes!
